Frequently Asked Questions
How does automatic face detection work?
ImgCub's Face Blur tool uses a machine learning model that runs directly in your browser to detect faces in photos. The AI analyzes the image to identify facial features such as eyes, nose, and mouth, then maps the boundaries of each face. Once detected, a blur or pixelation effect is applied to the selected regions. Because the AI model runs locally in your browser, your photos are never sent to any external server for processing.
Can I choose which faces to blur?
Yes. After the automatic face detection identifies all faces in your photo, you can select which faces to blur and which to leave untouched. This is useful for group photos where you want to protect the privacy of bystanders while keeping the main subjects visible. You can also manually add blur regions to cover areas the automatic detection may have missed.
What is the difference between blur and pixelation?
Blur applies a smooth Gaussian effect that makes facial features unrecognizable while maintaining a natural, soft appearance. Pixelation divides the face area into large colored blocks, creating a mosaic effect. Pixelation is generally considered more secure for privacy because the original pixel data is mathematically destroyed and cannot be reconstructed. For maximum privacy protection, pixelation is the safer choice.
Does Face Blur also remove EXIF metadata?
Yes. When you process an image with the Face Blur tool, all EXIF metadata is automatically stripped from the output file. This means the downloaded image has both visible faces obscured and hidden metadata removed, giving you complete privacy protection in a single step.
Can I blur other things besides faces, like license plates or text?
Yes. In addition to automatic face detection, you can manually select any region of the image to blur or pixelate. This is useful for covering license plates, street signs, document text, addresses, phone numbers, or any other sensitive information visible in the photo.
Is Face Blur accurate enough for GDPR compliance?
ImgCub's Face Blur tool is designed to help with privacy protection, but for formal GDPR compliance in a business context, you should verify that all identifiable faces are properly obscured before publishing. The automatic detection works well for front-facing and slightly angled faces, but may miss heavily obscured, very small, or side-profile faces. Always review the results manually.
What image formats are supported?
Face Blur supports JPG and PNG image formats, which cover the vast majority of photos taken by smartphones and digital cameras. The output file is saved in the same format as the input.
How many faces can it detect in one photo?
The tool can detect and blur multiple faces in a single image. There is no hard limit on the number of faces, though detection accuracy may decrease for very small faces (under approximately 40 pixels wide) or faces that are significantly obscured or in very low-light conditions.
